THE MEASURE OF TIME. Forthcoming from Grand Central Publishing. Spring 2019.
Russia, 1914. A scientist goes missing while racing Einstein to prove the theory of relativity, launching his sister on a desperate search to find him – a search that leads to love and a heartbreaking choice.
Armed with equations and photometers, Vanya goes missing while observing an eclipse that could prove relativity. Miriam, his sister, braves the firing squad to travel to his last known location to search for him. On her journey, she pulls a drowning soldier from the river. She’s a doctor, one of Russia’s few women who have been trained, and she revives him. To repay Miriam, the soldier vows to protect her. At the time, only man and wife can travel together without raising eyebrows and so they pose as newlyweds. While the pressures of war and winter clamp down, their contrived union builds into a deep, true love. When they finally find Vanya, his work is lost and Miriam must choose between her brother’s future and her own. Vanya’s success, or failure, in his race against Einstein remains hidden until 2000 when a family descendant living in Philadelphia, tracks down a mysterious Russian painting that may reveal Vanya’s final victory.
